RNI Registration

Give your publication a legal title the day it hits the stands.

RNI Registration is the process of registering a newspaper, magazine, journal, or periodical with the Registrar of Newspapers for India (now functioning as the Press Registrar General of India under the Press and Registration of Periodicals Act, 2023). It's what turns a printed title into a legally recognised publication — verified, unique, and protected against duplication by any other publisher in the same category.

Without it, you can't claim your title, apply for government advertisement empanelment, or defend your masthead if someone else prints under a confusingly similar name. Get it right from title verification to your first Annual Statement filing, and your publication starts life on solid legal footing — which is exactly why publishers bring in registration specialists instead of chasing the District Magistrate's office alone.

Publication Types

Which kind of publication are you registering?

The category you register under decides your periodicity rules, your declaration format, and how your Annual Statement is filed. Here's the full lineup we handle.

Daily Newspaper

Published at least five times a week, carrying public news — the most closely scrutinised category during title verification.

Most Popular

Weekly Newspaper

Released once a week, ideal for regional and community-focused news coverage with a lighter production overhead.

Fortnightly Periodical

Published every two weeks, commonly used for niche news digests and community bulletins.

Monthly Magazine

Feature-driven publications on lifestyle, business, or special-interest topics, released once every calendar month.

Quarterly Journal

Academic, trade, or literary journals published four times a year, often tied to institutions or associations.

Multi-Edition Newspaper

The same title printed from more than one place of publication, each edition requiring its own declaration and authentication.

Annual / Souvenir Publication

One-off or yearly special-issue publications tied to an event, institution, or anniversary, registered under a simplified periodicity.

Digital Replica / E-Paper

The exact digital replica of a registered print edition, linked to your existing RNI title for a consistent print-and-digital identity.

The Process

From title verification to certificate, in eight steps

Here's exactly what happens between choosing a title for your publication and holding a Certificate of Registration issued in its name.

1

Title Selection & Search

We shortlist candidate titles and run a preliminary check against the RNI database to avoid names that are already taken or deceptively similar.

2

Title Verification Application

A formal application is filed with the RNI to verify and provisionally reserve your chosen title in the requested language and state.

3

Title Verification Letter

Once cleared, the RNI issues a Title Verification Letter — your green light to proceed with printing arrangements and the declaration.

4

Printer & Press Tie-Up

We help you finalise a printing press and collect the printer's affidavit confirming their capacity to print your periodicity.

5

Declaration Before the DM

The publisher's declaration is filed and authenticated before the District Magistrate or authorised officer of the district.

6

Publish the First Issue

Your first issue is printed and published within the window prescribed after authentication, matching the verified title and periodicity exactly.

7

Submission to RNI

Copies of the first issue, the authenticated declaration, and supporting proofs are submitted to the RNI for final scrutiny.

8

Certificate of Registration

On approval, the RNI allots a registration number and issues your Certificate of Registration — the legal proof your title is officially registered.

Eligibility

Who can register a publication with the RNI?

Requirements vary slightly by state and periodicity, but every registration shares the same baseline conditions before a title can be verified.

Eligible Publisher

An Indian citizen, or an entity registered in India, may act as publisher; the publisher must be at least 18 years of age.

Registered Place of Publication

A verifiable address from which the periodical is printed and published, stated clearly in the declaration.

Approved Printing Press

A press capable of and affidavit-bound to printing your periodicity, named in the declaration filed with the DM.

Unique, Available Title

A proposed title that isn't identical or deceptively similar to any existing registered periodical in the same language and category.

No Prior Disqualification

The publisher must not be barred under the Press and Registration of Periodicals Act for past non-compliance, conviction, or a cancelled registration.

Compliance with Ownership Norms

Publications carrying news content must meet applicable foreign investment and cross-media ownership guidelines before registration.

Paperwork

Documents you'll need to keep handy

Gathering these upfront is the single biggest thing you can do to speed up title verification and declaration.

Title Verification Letter

Issued by RNI confirming title availability

Authenticated copy from the District Magistrate

Printer's Affidavit

Confirming press capacity for your periodicity
