ISBN Number Registration

Give your book a global identity, ready for every shelf.

An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is the unique 13-digit code that identifies your book — by title, edition, and format — to publishers, distributors, retailers, and libraries around the world. Without it, your book has no way to be catalogued, ordered, or sold through mainstream bookstores and online marketplaces.

We handle the entire ISBN application on your behalf — from publisher registration to barcode generation — so authors, self-publishers, and publishing houses can get their book market-ready without decoding government paperwork themselves.

Formats

Every format of your book needs its own ISBN

An ISBN doesn't identify a "book" in the abstract — it identifies one specific edition, in one specific format. Here's the full range we register for authors and publishers.

01

Paperback Edition

The standard softcover print ISBN, the most common format for trade and self-published titles sold in stores and online.

Most Popular
02

Hardcover Edition

A separate ISBN for the bound hardback release, tracked independently from the paperback for sales and library cataloguing.

03

eBook / Digital Edition

Covers EPUB, MOBI, and PDF releases — required by most digital storefronts including Kindle, Kobo, and Google Play Books.

04

Audiobook Edition

A distinct ISBN for the narrated audio release, used by audiobook platforms and distributors to list and track sales.

05

Revised / New Edition

Whenever content is substantially updated, a fresh ISBN keeps the new edition distinguishable from earlier prints.

06

Translated Edition

Each language translation of your title is treated as its own publication and needs its own ISBN.

07

Large Print Edition

A separate accessibility-focused edition with a larger typeface, registered individually for libraries and specialist retailers.

08

Boxed Set / Multi-Volume

Bundled sets and multi-part series can carry a combined-set ISBN in addition to each individual volume's number.

09

Academic / Textbook Edition

Textbooks and course material carry their own ISBN track, often paired with ISSN registration for recurring journals.

The Process

From manuscript to a live ISBN, in eight steps

Here's exactly what happens between submitting your title and holding a verified ISBN with a print-ready barcode.

1

Publisher Registration

We register you as a publisher with the national ISBN agency, individual authors included, before any title can be filed.

2

Title & Manuscript Details

Book title, subtitle, author names, and a short synopsis are submitted to begin the application record.

3

Format & Edition Selection

We confirm which formats — print, eBook, audiobook — need separate ISBNs for this release.

4

Document Verification

Identity, address, and publisher documents are checked for completeness before filing with the agency.

5

ISBN Allocation

The national ISBN agency assigns a unique 13-digit number from your publisher's registered block.

6

Barcode Generation

A scannable EAN-13 barcode is generated from your ISBN, ready to place on the back cover.

7

Certificate Issuance

You receive an official ISBN allotment certificate confirming the number is registered to your title.

8

Catalogue Listing

We help list your book in Books in Print and notify relevant libraries and distributors so it's discoverable immediately.

Eligibility

Who can apply for an ISBN?

ISBN registration is open to anyone publishing a book for distribution or sale — here's the baseline criteria most applicants need to meet.

A Publisher of Record

Self-published authors, independent presses, institutions, and established publishing houses can all register as a publisher.

A Book Intended for Distribution

The title must be intended for sale or public distribution — manuscripts kept purely private don't require an ISBN.

Valid Identity & Address Proof

Government-issued ID and address proof for the individual author or the registered publishing entity.

A Unique, Unregistered Title

The exact title and edition must not already carry an ISBN from a previous application.

One ISBN per Format & Edition

Each print run, digital format, and revised edition is registered as its own distinct publication.

Lawful, Original Content

The work must be original or properly licensed, with no unresolved copyright or plagiarism disputes.

Paperwork

Documents you'll need to keep handy

Gathering these upfront is the single biggest thing you can do to speed up your ISBN application.

Identity Proof

PAN, Aadhaar, or passport of the author/publisher

Address Proof

Utility bill or bank statement of the publisher

Publisher Registration

Business proof, if publishing under an imprint

Title & Synopsis

Working title, subtitle, and a short summary

Draft Cover Design

Front cover artwork, even in draft form

Signed form confirming authorship and rights

Photograph

Recent passport-size photo of the applicant

Prior ISBN Records

For series titles or revised editions, if any
