MSME / Udyam Registration

Get your business officially recognised as an MSME, backed by the Government of India.

MSME Registration — done through the Udyam Registration Portal of the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises — is the process of formally recognising your manufacturing or service business as a Micro, Small, or Medium Enterprise. It's a free, fully online, self-declaration based process that gives your business a unique Udyam Registration Number and a government-issued Udyam Certificate.

Once recognised, your enterprise unlocks collateral-free loans, priority sector lending, protection against delayed payments, tax and tender benefits, and dozens of state and central government schemes built specifically for small businesses. Skipping it means leaving all of that support on the table — which is why most founders let our MSME experts handle the filing correctly the first time.

Classification

Which MSME category does your business fall under?

Since 1 April 2025, every enterprise is classified on a composite criterion — both investment in plant, machinery, or equipment and annual turnover — with manufacturing and service businesses treated identically. Here's the full picture of who qualifies.

Micro≤ ₹2.5 Cr / ≤ ₹10 Cr
Small≤ ₹25 Cr / ≤ ₹100 Cr
Medium≤ ₹125 Cr / ≤ ₹500 Cr

Micro Enterprise

Investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore — the category most small businesses, freelancers-turned-founders, and home-grown brands fall into.

Most Common

Small Enterprise

Investment up to ₹25 crore and turnover up to ₹100 crore — typically growth-stage manufacturers, exporters, and multi-location service businesses.

Medium Enterprise

Investment up to ₹125 crore and turnover up to ₹500 crore — larger, established units that still qualify for MSME schemes and priority sector lending.

Manufacturing Enterprises

Units engaged in production or processing of goods, classified by investment in plant and machinery, on par with service-sector rules since 2020.

Service Enterprises

IT, consulting, healthcare, logistics, and other service providers, classified by investment in equipment and annual turnover, identical to manufacturing norms.

Retail & Wholesale Trade

Traders were brought under Udyam in 2021 and can register for priority sector lending benefits, even though some non-financial schemes remain manufacturing/service-only.

Informal Micro Enterprises

Businesses without PAN or GSTIN can still formalise through the Udyam Assist Platform and receive an Udyam Assist Certificate, valid for priority sector lending.

Existing Udyog Aadhaar / EM-II Holders

Businesses still holding the older Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum or EM-II must migrate to Udyam to keep receiving MSME benefits without interruption.

The Process

From Aadhaar OTP to Udyam Certificate, in eight steps

Here's exactly what happens on the Udyam Registration Portal between starting your application and holding a verified Udyam Certificate.

1

Visit the Udyam Registration Portal

We start your application on the official Udyam portal, choosing the correct entry point for new entrepreneurs or existing UAM/EM-II holders.

2

Aadhaar Number & OTP Verification

The proprietor's, partner's, or authorised director's Aadhaar number is entered and verified via an OTP sent to the linked mobile number.

3

PAN & Organisation Type Verification

We select the correct organisation type and validate the enterprise's PAN, confirming whether the previous year's ITR has been filed.

4

GSTIN & ITR Linking

Where applicable, GSTIN details are linked so the portal can auto-fetch turnover data directly from GST and Income Tax records.

5

Enterprise & Investment Details

Business name, address, bank details, and investment in plant, machinery, or equipment are declared to determine your classification.

6

NIC Code & Activity Selection

We map your business to the correct National Industrial Classification (NIC) code so your registration accurately reflects your activity.

7

Application Review & Submission

Every field is double-checked against your documents before final submission, to avoid rejections or the need for later corrections.

8

Udyam Certificate Generation

Your Udyam Registration Number and downloadable Udyam Certificate are generated — usually within a day, entirely free of government fees.

Eligibility

Who can register as an MSME?

Sole proprietorships, partnership firms, LLPs, private and public companies, HUFs, trusts, and co-operative societies engaged in manufacturing or service activity can all apply, as long as they meet the following baseline criteria.

Valid Aadhaar Number

Of the proprietor, managing partner, or authorised director/karta, used for identity verification on the Udyam portal.

PAN of the Enterprise

A valid Permanent Account Number for the business entity or its proprietor is mandatory for registration.

Within Investment & Turnover Limits

Investment in plant, machinery, or equipment and annual turnover must fall within the Micro, Small, or Medium thresholds.

Engaged in Manufacturing or Service Activity

The enterprise must be engaged in production, processing, or providing services — not a purely non-business or charitable activity.

GSTIN, Where Applicable

Businesses required to register under GST law must furnish a valid GSTIN; others below the GST threshold can register without one.

One Registration per PAN

A single enterprise can hold only one Udyam Registration, though it may add multiple business activities under the same number.

Paperwork

Documents you'll need to keep handy

Udyam Registration is paperless and self-declaration based — no documents are uploaded to the portal — but keeping these on hand speeds up accurate filing.

FAQ

Common questions about MSME / Udyam registration

Can't find your question here? Use the form alongside this page and we'll answer it directly.

It's the process of registering a business on the government's Udyam Registration Portal to be formally recognised as a Micro, Small, or Medium Enterprise, unlocking access to MSME schemes and benefits.

It isn't legally mandatory to operate, but without it your business can't access MSME-specific loans, subsidies, tax benefits, or tender preferences.

Sole proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs, companies, HUFs, trusts, and co-operative societies engaged in manufacturing or service activity, within the prescribed investment and turnover limits.

Udyog Aadhaar and EM-II were the older registration systems; Udyam replaced them in 2020 and existing holders must migrate to keep receiving MSME benefits.

No, Udyam Registration is completely free on the official government portal; you only pay for professional assistance if you choose to use it.

Usually within a day once Aadhaar, PAN, and business details are verified — it's one of the fastest government registrations available.

Aadhaar, PAN, GSTIN where applicable, bank details, and investment particulars — see the Documents section above for the full list. No uploads are needed.

Crossing either the investment or turnover ceiling moves you to the next higher category; you're only downgraded once you fall below both limits.

Yes, retail and wholesale traders were permitted to register on Udyam from 2021, primarily to access priority sector lending benefits.

Because we track every classification revision, file your application correctly the first time, and stay on to help with re-classification and compliance afterward.
